GENERAL INFORMATION

What software does Windows Tablet PC operate on?

Windows Tablet is powered by Windows 8.1 with Bing.

Do I need to create a Microsoft account when prompted to “Sign in to your PC”?

No, you are not required to create a Microsoft account during the setup process. You may select “sign in without a Microsoft Account” first and continue with tablet set up, and create one at a later time. However, if you wish to access the Microsoft App Store or other services such as One Drive, Outlook, Office, Skype and other apps, it may require you to sign in with a Microsoft account.

What is a Microsoft account?

A Microsoft account is an email address and password that you need in order to use certain services on the tablet. If you have used Microsoft services in the past - such as Xbox, Hotmail, Outlook.com, OneDrive, Messenger, Skype, or Windows Phone - you already have a Microsoft account. (It is the email address you use to sign in).

How can I create a Microsoft account if I do not already have one?

You can sign up for an Outlook email account that can be used as the log-in for your Microsoft account. Please refer to www.outlook.com for details on how to create an account.

Where can I find the desktop screen?

To navigate to the more familiar Windows desktop, simply click the Desktop tile from the Start screen.

What is the battery life when Wi-Fi is activated?

When Wi-Fi is activated on a full charge, you can surf the web for about 3-4 hours continuously (on low to medium backlight setting.)

The battery of my Windows Tablet seems to run out very quickly, what can I do?

The Windows Tablet was programmed so that it can be woken up from sleep mode by certain application functions, such as the email inbox automatically refreshing every 10 minutes. As a result, if you have network applications running in the background, that are auto-launched at boot, they may drain the battery life more rapidly. If you are not using the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth functions, shut them off. The system settings may also affect battery drain. For instance, a tablet set to maximum screen brightest and speaker volume drains more energy. We recommend setting your device to enter sleep mode after 2 minutes of non-use in order to better conserve battery power.

The battery of my Windows tablet is completely drained and the device will not switch on to charge.

Connect the unit to its supplied power cord and wall adapter to charge. When charging via USB, it is important to:

  • Charge using the wall socket USB adapter instead of a PC USB port.
  • Use the special USB charging cable that was supplied with the device. Charging from a standard PC USB port or using a different USB cable may result in very slow charging or no charging at all.

If your device is fully discharged, it may take up to 2hrs of charging before the unit has enough power to start up. Even after the tablet powers on, keep the charger connected until it is fully charged.

How can I prolong the usage time of the Battery?

  • Adjust the brightness of the LCD Screen to a lower level in the "Brightness” setting.
  • Turn down the volume.
  • Set a time for the tablet to enter Sleep mode.
  • Turn off Wireless features (WLAN, Bluetooth) when not in use.

How can I change the sleep settings for my screen to dim the display?

The sleep setting determines how long the tablet waits to dim its display from the last touch input. To adjust your sleep setting, select the Settings charm on the right pane and select “Change PC settings.” In PC Settings, select “PC and devices,” then select “Power and sleep.” You will see two options on the right side to change the sleep settings for when the tablet is running on battery power and when the tablet is plugged into a power source.

What USB devices work on the tablet?

Various USB devices work on Windows Tablets via the USB host, such as:

  • Common layout USB keyboards
  • Most USB mice
  • USB flash drives even some USB hard drives (as long as they are self-powered)

The keyboard does not appear on screen when I make a selection to type something in, what do I do?

If the keyboard does not automatically come up when you click into a text input area, click on the Keyboard icon at the bottom right corner of the screen on the task bar, and the keyboard should appear.

I cannot turn on my device, what should I do?

Make sure that your battery is completely charged by connecting it to its power adapter for at least 8 hours. If the power adapter is plugged into a power bar or surge protector, make sure that it is turned on as well.

My Windows Tablet PC will not respond, what should I do?

If the device freezes, press and hold power button for 10 seconds to force restart.

My tablet seems to be running slower than when I originally got it, what can I do?

If you feel like your tablet’s response and performance time has slowed, you may have dozens of apps running in the background that have been kept opened, causing the tablet to perform slower. This affects performance speed as well as battery life. You may also check to see if the tablet is downloading a routine Windows update, which can cause the system to use more resources for downloading and installation. It is recommended to allow the tablet to finish its updates before proceeding with any heavy use.

To see what apps are running, swipe in from the left edge of the screen (do release hold yet) and you will grab an open app’s thumbnail. While holding onto the app’s thumbnail, a black bar will appear on the left side of the screen. Slowly move the app thumbnail into the black bar and it will display all the thumbnails of your open apps.

To remove an app, first select the app to open it. Once opened, slide from the top edge of the screen all the way to the bottom edge to completely close the app. Repeat the process to close any additional apps.

If you feel that your tablet continues to perform slowly after following our suggested steps, we recommend restarting the tablet or resetting it from the “Update and recovery” section within the PC Settings menu. Resetting the tablet to factory settings is simple and quick (usually less than 20 min) and could potentially save you a call to customer support or a return. However, if you choose to “Remove everything and reinstall Windows,” it does mean that you will have to re-download some apps and re-transfer media to the tablet.

How do I see what apps are currently opened?

To see what apps are running, swipe in from the left edge of the screen (do release hold yet) and you will grab an open app’s thumbnail. While holding onto the app’s thumbnail, a black bar will appear on the left side of the screen. Slowly move the app thumbnail into the black bar and it will display all the thumbnails of your open apps.

How do I quit an app completely?

To remove an app, first select the app to open it. Once opened, slide from the top edge of the screen all the way to the bottom edge to completely close the app. Repeat the process to close any additional apps.

How do I do a factory default recovery?

To perform a recovery, swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms. Click on “Settings” and choose “Change PC Settings” located on the bottom right hand corner. On the left pane, select “Update and recovery.” On the next screen, select “Recovery,” then choose between Refresh, Remove/Reinstall, or Advanced Startup options. Once selected, click on the “Get started” button below the options to start the recovery process.

***NOTE: Once reset, all settings will be restored to factory default settings and the user will be required to redo the initial setup process. Also, all installed applications and personal user data will be erased. Be sure to back up all files before you attempt a system recovery.***

  • Upon entering the tablet’s main page, press the Volume buttons to test if the volume begins adjusting (to check if the system responds.)
  • If the system can be rebooted and volume is working, the touch sensor function might have failed. Please submit a new Ticket at our Online Support Center to inform us of the problem and receive RMA instructions.

Why is my tablet not holding a charge?

If it appears that your tablet is not charging with the wall charger, please try connecting the tablet to a PC’s USB port directly using the supplied cable. If the tablet can charge then, it would appear that the wall adapter/plug is faulty. Please open a new Ticket at our Online Ticket System to request a new wall plug.

If the tablet cannot charge with both the wall adapter and USB connection to PC, please open a new Ticket at our Online Support Center to inform us of the problem and receive RMA instructions.

How do I know if the charger is working?

The light next to the Power button will light up when the tablet is plugged into the charger/wall socket to indicate that the charger is working.

How do I clean the device?

Wipe the device using a clean cellulose sponge or chamois cloth (i.e. 3M cleaning cloth.) To prevent damaging the device, it is suggested to clean the device when it is powered off.

  • Make sure you are within the Wi-Fi router/modem’s signal range when making the connection.
  • Try connecting to another Wi-Fi access point (one with different modem) to see if your tablet reacts the same way. • Turn off the Wi-Fi then turn it back on again, and the tablet should detect your network.
  • If your network has a password set up, be very careful that you do not confuse the number “1” with the letter “I”, and “0” and “O”. Be sure to also type characters in the correct letter case (lower/upper.) These are some very common mistakes that users make.

OneDrive

How to add your files to OneDrive

There are a few different ways to place existing files onto OneDrive. First, decide if you want to keep the original files on your PC and put copies of them onto OneDrive, or if you want to cut and move them from your PC to OneDrive.

To copy files to OneDrive using the OneDrive app

    • On the Start screen, tap or click OneDrive to open the OneDrive app
    • Tap or click folders to browse to the location on OneDrive where you want to add the files.
    • Swipe in from the bottom edge of the screen to open the app commands, and then tap or click “Add files.”
    • Browse to the files you want to upload, tap or click to select them, and then tap or click “Copy to OneDrive.”

To move files to OneDrive using the OneDrive app

When you move files, you are removing them from your PC and adding them onto OneDrive.

  1. From within the OneDrive app, tap or click the down arrow next to “OneDrive” and choose “This PC.”
  2. Browse to the files you want to move, and then swipe down on them to select them.
  3. Tap or click “Cut.”
  4. Tap or click the down arrow next to “This PC” and choose “OneDrive” to locate a folder in which to paste the file.

To move files to OneDrive using File Explorer

When you move files, you are removing them from your PC and adding them onto OneDrive. Drag files from the file list in the right pane to OneDrive in the left pane.

To save files to OneDrive from an app

You can save files from your apps directly to OneDrive. You’ll have the choice to save to OneDrive or to other locations, including to your PC. Tap or click the down arrow in the upper-left corner to change your location to OneDrive (if it isn’t selected already.)

Then, choose the folder in OneDrive to which you would like to save your file, enter a name for the file, and then tap or click “Save.”

To save files to OneDrive from a Desktop app

When you're using a Desktop app like Microsoft Office Word or Paint, you can also save files directly to OneDrive. Click “Save” in the app you’re using, and then tap or click “OneDrive” in the left pane.

Choose the folder in OneDrive to which you would like to save your file, enter a name for the file, and then tap or click “Save.”

Saving to OneDrive automatically

On most PCs, OneDrive is the recommended location that appears when you save Microsoft Office files (like Word docs and Excel worksheets), PDFs, and other documents. And, if your PC has a built-in camera, you can automatically save copies of the photos you take directly to OneDrive so you’ll always have a backup. To make sure your PC is set up to save automatically, check your OneDrive settings.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap “Settings,” and then tap “Change PC settings” and select OneDrive.
  2. For documents, click “File storage,” and then turn on “Save documents to OneDrive by default” on the right pane.
  3. For photos, click “Camera roll,” and then choose “Upload photos at good quality,” or for higher resolution copies, choose “Upload photos at best quality.”

Accessing your files from anywhere

When your files are saved in OneDrive, you can access them from any device, even if something happens to your PC. You can go to the OneDrive website, or you can use a mobile app for Android, iOS, or the Windows Phone.

Accessing files when you’re offline

On Windows 8.1, you can browse all your files in OneDrive even when you're not connected to the Internet. If you also want to open and edit files when you don't have Internet connection, you need to make those files available offline. You can use the OneDrive app or File Explorer to make files available offline.

To make files available offline using the OneDrive app

Swipe down the file or folder to select it, and then tap or click “Make offline.” If you are worried about using too much space on your PC, make fewer files available offline. If there are files you no longer need to use when you are offline, change them back to online-only.

If space on your PC isn't a concern, you can also make your entire OneDrive available offline.

  1. From within the OneDrive app, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap “Settings.”
  2. Tap or click “Options,” and then turn on “Access all my OneDrive files offline.”

To make files available offline using File Explorer

Press and hold the file, and then choose “Make available offline.” To make your entire OneDrive available offline, press and hold OneDrive in the left pane, and then choose “Make available offline” on the drop-down menu.

Sharing files

Sharing files using OneDrive is much simpler than setting up file sharing on a home network, and more organized and efficient than sending files in email or carrying them around on a USB flash drive.

To share files and folders using the OneDrive app

  1. Swipe down on files or folders to select them.
  2. Tap or click “Share.”
  3. To share with specific individuals or groups, choose “Invite people.” To share with various people you might not even know personally, choose “Get a link.”
